Syringe Units to mL
On a U-100 insulin syringe, 100 units is 1 mL, so 1 unit is 0.01 mL. Enter either one to convert it.

Volume
20 units = 0.2 mL
Measured exactly on 30, 50 and 100-unit syringes.
01 Amount
02 Syringe (U-100)
Syringe size
The starting value is an example. This converts volume on a U-100 syringe only. It does not say how much drug the liquid holds and does not recommend a dose.
How to convert units and mL
- Units to mL: divide by 100. 20 units ÷ 100 = 0.2 mL.
- mL to units: multiply by 100. 0.5 mL × 100 = 50 units.
So 1 mL is 100 units, 0.1 mL is 10 units and 0.05 mL is 5 units. The scale is the same on 30, 50 and 100-unit syringes. Only how much they hold and how often the lines are printed change.
Units to mL table
The last column shows which syringe sizes have a printed line at that amount. 30 and 50-unit syringes are marked every unit. 100-unit syringes are marked every 2 units, so odd amounts such as 5, 15 or 25 units fall halfway between two lines.
| Units | mL | Measured exactly on |
|---|---|---|
| 5 units | 0.05 mL | 30 and 50-unit |
| 8 units | 0.08 mL | 30, 50 and 100-unit |
| 10 units | 0.1 mL | 30, 50 and 100-unit |
| 12.5 units | 0.125 mL | None: between marks |
| 15 units | 0.15 mL | 30 and 50-unit |
| 20 units | 0.2 mL | 30, 50 and 100-unit |
| 25 units | 0.25 mL | 30 and 50-unit |
| 30 units | 0.3 mL | 30, 50 and 100-unit |
| 40 units | 0.4 mL | 50 and 100-unit |
| 50 units | 0.5 mL | 50 and 100-unit |
| 100 units | 1 mL | 100-unit |
12.5 units is 0.125 mL. It falls between marks on all three sizes, so it cannot be drawn exactly. If your draw comes out like this, ask your pharmacy how to measure it.
Units measure volume, not drug
A unit on the syringe is 0.01 mL of whatever liquid is in it. How much drug that holds depends on the concentration on the vial label. 20 units is 0.2 mL from any vial. At 10 mg/mL it holds 2 mg; at 5 mg/mL it holds 1 mg.
To turn a dose in mg into units for your vial, use the mg to units calculator. To read the lines on the barrel, see how to read an insulin syringe.
Only for U-100 syringes
Everything on this page assumes a U-100 insulin syringe, where 100 units fill 1 mL. If your syringe is not marked U-100, these numbers do not apply to it.
The converter works in volume only. It does not recommend a dose. See the safety notes.
Common questions
How many units in 1 mL?
On a U-100 insulin syringe, 1 mL is 100 units. So 1 unit is 0.01 mL and 10 units is 0.1 mL.
What is 10 units on a syringe?
10 units is 0.1 mL on a U-100 syringe. It lands on a printed mark on 30, 50 and 100-unit syringes.
How many units is 0.5 mL?
0.5 mL is 50 units. That fills a 50-unit syringe to its top line, or half of a 100-unit syringe.
What is 25 units on a 100-unit syringe?
25 units is 0.25 mL. A 100-unit syringe is marked every 2 units, so 25 falls halfway between the 24 and 26 lines. Try a 30 or 50-unit syringe, which is marked every unit and has a line at 25. If the draw still falls between marks, ask your pharmacy how to measure it.
What does 20 units look like on a syringe?
20 units is 0.2 mL. On a 30 or 50-unit syringe, marked every unit, it is the 20th line after zero. On a 100-unit syringe, marked every 2 units, it is the 10th line. The converter above draws it on whichever size you pick.
